2 Kawas will spawn in every few rounds from trapdoors at (12, 12) and (12, 3). To complete the Encounter, each of your surviving units must occupy one of the 6 escape points at the other side of the map. Defeated units are not counted against you - you could even have only a single surviving unit and complete the encounter if they reach the escape zone.

The Kawas that spawn during the story mission here will increase the stats of the Soul Eater and Soul Armor if killed by their users. As the Kawas spawn infinitely, this battle alone can fully charge either or both of these items.
